Stephen L. Hakes was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1969. In 1974 his family moved to Auburn, Michigan. There he graduated from Western High School in 1988, and proceeded to undergraduate work at Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, receiving his Bachelor's Degree in the pre-seminary program, a major in psychology-sociology and a minor in music. There he met Lori, and married her the summer after graduation.
In 1992, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he entered the seminary. From 1994-1995 he served as vicar at St. James Lutheran Church in Lafayette, Indiana. In the spring of 1996 Stephen graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree, ordained by his father on June 16 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church - Richville, Michigan, and installed as pastor in a rural congregation in southeastern Nebraska. In 1997 son Daniel was born.
The family moved to Lakewood, Colorado where Stephen worked at Nextel Communications and Rocky Mountain Remediation Services for nearly three years in the company's marketing/business development areas. He served as a layman at Hosanna Lutheran in Littleton, Colorado, teaching Bible studies, helping with the youth, playing organ and assisting with choir, and starting their visitors' care ministry. In 1999 daughter Megan was born.
In 2000 Christ Lutheran Church of Norfolk extended to him the position of Director of Music Ministries, which he accepted. In August of 2000 the family moved to Norfolk. In Norfolk their third child, Lauren, was born. |
